You know how I was writing the other day that I was dying under Vista? Well it turns out that Microsoft has done a lot of damage to our little household with their half-finished product. We live in the country and rely on satellite internet that has a bandwidth cap. And because Vista has been rolling out dozens of updates this week (supposedly to make it less horrible), we’re about to top out. Needless to say that upon realizing this, we’ve switched off our auto-updates.
Tell me, fellow freelancers, would you ever deign to present your client with a half-finished product, and advise them that you’ll spend the next 18 months sending them the rest of the pieces? And then ultimately just scrap the whole thing after 18 months and make them buy a whole new half-finished product? I’m willing to bet that if you tried, you would be very broke, very fast!
So why do we allow Bill Gates and his evil Microsoft henchmen to do it to us?

I gave up on Windows long before the Vista debacle. Linux works better, is free, and doesn’t require you to buy a new computer with every major version. The popular distributions come with OpenOffice.org, which will edit your Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, and can be trusted not to move to a new and incompatible file format in a year or two.
Bill Gates is no longer the CEO of Microsoft. Instead he’s devoting more of his time to operating the single largest transparently operating charitable organization on planet earth.
Yes Vista was a flop, but you didn’t have to buy it. You could have kept your XP box, gotten a Mac, gone to any flavor of linux your heart desired or even just gone with opensolaris or FreeBSD.
Don’t blame the guy selling the stuff you hate when there’s a dozen other games in town. If you know how to use google and you have a machine that can run XP or Vista then you can use and operate Ubuntu with much less hassle.
Sorry to be a buzzkill.
