ProBlogger has a two part article on posting frequency and developing a posting rhythm.
- There is no Right Posting Level
- Start out Slow and Work Your Way Up
- Monitor Your Readerships Response to Your Posting Levels
- Consistency is Important
Personally, as long as I care about the subject, I don’t need to be reminded to post. Over on LadyBlog I post a minimum of twice a week. Same goes for RightPundits. At Girl on the Right I aim for 3-5 per week. Right now, because this blog is new and the novelty hasn’t dimmed at all, I am doing multiple posts almost every day. I see this as being a 3-5 per week blog in the future, too.
Some blogs have been in existence since forever and still manage to crank out 5-7 posts per day. Others have always been twice a week deals (which sucks when it’s one of my faves, and I want more from the author).
So what’s the right answer? Well, there isn’t one.
Consistency is key. It doesn’t matter if you post 20 a day or only 20 a month – so long as you maintain a regular rhythm your readers can count on.
Darren also talks about Batch Writing, which is something I will use if I’m headed on vacation or if my week looks really crazy. In WordPress you have the option of future dating posts and having them linger in the background until that time rolls around. So on a Sunday night you could conceivably write your whole week’s worth of posts. Of course, if you are a news blogger, as I am on other sites, this is no good. You have to remain topical and what’s news on Sunday night is old hash by Tuesday afternoon.
News bloggers and old hands alike can learn from this two-part series. I know I did. Specifically, tip #6: Don’t Post Just for the Sake of Posting. I often find myself in a bind when I’m due to have something over on RP or LadyBlog, yet nothing in the news catches my fancy. So I’ll phone it in with a second rate piece, which lowers my credibility as a writer.
Are there any tips you can add to Darren’s list? Did you take anything away from what he offered up?
