Despite the various inaccurate clichés about the work at home moms who stay in their pajamas all day and watch Oprah, real working from home isn’t like that. Yes, freelancing is feast or famine much of the time, with some days being writing chaos while others are spent cruising the job sites and praying hard.
Yes, I will admit to the occasional one-hour Guitar Hero break. Clears the head, you know. But I do not spend all day in front of the XBox.
But bedtime is different. Ever since getting into politics and making terror my niche, my nightmares have increased from one or two a week to five or six. So I no longer read topical books on politics or war at bedtime. My ex-husband made a rule about it, and I have stuck by it. I’ve gone back to fluffy fiction.
At bedtime I wind down and try to switch off my brain. I try my best (but often fail) to stop worrying about different jobs or bills etc. Freelancers need to relax as much as anyone else. So I am currently reading the Tom Holt Omnibus 5, Tall Stories, which I got for Christmas. I get to laugh on my way to Nod, without terror or bombings or buildings falling down. I get to sleep.
What do y’all read to wind down from a busy day? Magazines? Trade journals? Or fluffy fiction like me?

For me, I have to read strictly fiction for about an hour before I can fall asleep. Perhaps some non-fiction if I am really interested and it has nothing to do with our home biz.
Let’s face it, if they had Guitar Hero in the office we’d all take one hour GH breaks. But I think that’s because many good businesses recognize that their employees can’t be focused on the business 24/7 -it only leads to burn-out. The same is true for any home business as well.
Hope you enjoy your Omnibus!
Now that you’re living in England, Jamie, you should check Holt out. Try Falling Sideways. Very funny book.

Fluffy fiction all the way. Just reading a Stephen King at the moment though
